In a globalized world English is an important medium of communication. As a non-native user of the language I have expanded my world, both physically and intellectually. Young people, you have enough time and all sorts of ways to gain more confidence in using English.

Associate Professor

Kelly King

My research interests include sociology of education, critical race theory, critical pedagogy, social justice, and the education of linguistic, racial and ethnic minority groups in Japan. My hope for UF students is to learn more about yourselves and others and join ongoing discussions on issues that affect us all. Be passionate. Be fearless.

Senior Assistant Professor

Two things for you.  One, your education, and life, are what you make of them.  Only YOU can make them worthwhile.  Make every moment valuable, and movement count 100%.  Maximize every opportunity by taking the right risks to achieve your dreams.  And two, you are not the only one on Earth.  Seek out others.  Speak and listen to them. Share your experiences because in the end all we have to learn from are our experiences - his-story and her-story.  Peace, Wayne-sensei

To be happy, to be successful, open yourself to experiences.  Experience is a great teacher, and if learning a new language offers you entrance into a realm of new experiences, isn't that really a chance you can't afford to pass up?  My favorite quotes on language say it much better than I can:

Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.---Benjamin Lee Whorf  (American linguist and fire prevention engineer  who also worked as a chemical engineer)

One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way. ---Frank Smith  (British psycholinguist)

The limits of my language are the limits of my world. --- Ludwig Wittgenstein (Austrian-British philosopher)  also worked on the philosophy of mathematics

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin.

"If you are not willing to learn, no one can help. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you."

Assistant Professor

University is derived from the Latin word universitas – a community of people who work together to create new knowledge. This original meaning is what shapes my view of teaching and learning: all together, as a community, we can create something bigger than ourselves. Our means is English. Our goal is a better future, towards which we all contribute. Welcome to the University of Fukui: here you can thrive, reach your potential, and communicate and share your experiences with like-minded people.
